New Head of Economics appointed

The School of Economics is pleased to announce that Dr Vasco Gabriel will take up the post of Head of School from 1 August 2013. Dr Jo Blanden will continue in her role as Deputy Head of School.

A graduate in Economics from the Technical University of Lisbon in 1995, Dr Gabriel received a Masters in Econometrics from the same institution in 1998. In 2002, he completed his PhD in Economics at Birkbeck College, University of London. He then taught at the University of Minho, Portugal, before being appointed as a Lecturer at the University of Surrey in 2004.

Dr Gabriel is currently the Deputy Director of the Centre for International Macroeconomic Studies and a Research Fellow of the Economic Policies Research Unit.

Professor David Allen, Executive Dean of the Faculty of Business, Economics and Law, said: “I am delighted that Dr Vasco Gabriel will take up the post of Head of the School of Economics, ensuring that the School can continue to build on its recent success.

“I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Professor Rob Witt for his excellent work in the role over the last five years. Rob's commitment and hard work has been essential in leading the School of Economics’ excellent progress in research and teaching and achieving the School's number two ranking in the Guardian University Guide.”
