The University of Surrey: a home for Young Enterprise

The entrepreneurial spirit of undergraduates at the University of Surrey has again been shown, with two student teams reaching the Young Enterprise Start Up finals.

In the University’s first year of entering, Surrey teams Brolliant and 4C were chosen out of 366 student companies from across the UK to be among the 10 finalists for the event. Held at Canary Wharf in London, the finals involved the teams creating a trade stand, pitching their idea and providing an investment proposal to a panel of six judges.

Brolliant produced an innovative umbrella that incorporated LED lights into the design, funding prototype models with winnings from a previous pitching competition at the University. Surrey’s other representatives, 4C, designed a website called Splaza, which provides a campus-based buy/trade/swap platform for students free of charge.

The University of Surrey successfully launched the Young Enterprise Start Up programme in October 2012. A national initiative that allows undergraduates to plan, create and run their own company under the guidance of experienced business mentors, this year’s programme featured over 2,000 students from 44 universities across the UK.
