Vice-Chancellor's installation speech

Through our education and research, the University will not only enrich cultures and transform lives, but also contribute to communities locally, nationally and globally.

Professor G.Q. Max Lu

Speaking as he was installed, Professor Lu called on the University, its partners and supporters to help realise a vision of Surrey as a leading global university.

Professor Lu said: “Within a decade, the University of Surrey will be a destination of choice for higher learning nationally and internationally, and a preferred partner for government, business and industry. We will be an engaged and connected university that is the intellectual home for alumni, supporters and the community. To achieve this, support from alumni and partners, and the broader community will become ever more crucial.

“Our students are smart, enthusiastic and have great community spirit. That’s why we should treat students not as mere consumers, but as members of the University. As members, all students have rights and responsibilities - the rights to be informed, supported, and educated well.  And as members, students are admitted subject to attaining a high level of qualifications, and also have the responsibility to do their best to study, to meet the academic standards, to help the University improve and grow through their volunteering and community participation.

“Through our education and research, the University will not only enrich cultures and transform lives, but also contribute to communities locally, nationally and globally.”
