Centre for Vision, Speech and Signal Processing studentships
The Centre for Vision, Speech and Signal Processing's (CVSSP) research spans computer vision, machine learning, artificial intelligence (AI), robotics, audio-visual signal processing and medical imaging pioneering ground-breaking technologies for healthcare, security, entertainment and autonomous systems. Twelve fully-funded PhD studentships, including fees and stipend, are available for outstanding candidates to join the centre.
Start date1 September 2019
These 3-year PhD studentships will cover Home or EU university tuition fees, a tax-free maintenance grant of up to £14,777 per annum and contribution to travel costs to present your research at national and international conferences. Studentships are open to overseas students provided they can support the difference between home and overseas fees (£16,540).

CVSSP is a leading UK research centre in audio-visual signal processing, computer vision and machine learning. Our Centre is one of the largest in Europe with over 150 researchers and a grant portfolio in excess of £23 million, bringing together a unique combination of cutting-edge sound and vision expertise. Our aim is to advance the state-of-the-art in machine perception combining artificial intelligence (AI) and multi-modal sensing to enable machines to see, hear and understand the world around them. Our Centre has an outstanding track record of innovative research leading to technology transfer and exploitation in biometrics, creative industries (film, TV, games, VR, AR), mobile communication, healthcare, robotics, autonomous vehicles and consumer electronics.
CVSSP promotes a friendly, supportive and inclusive research environment. Postgraduate Research Experience Survey (PRES) 2018 ranked the University of Surrey 7th in the UK out of 63 and 4th for retention and completion. CVSSP’s average PRES 2018 result was 89%, with 100% overall satisfaction. CVSSP PhDs have received a number of prestigious awards for their research contributions including three British Machine Vision Association Sullivan Thesis Awards, European Biometrics Industry Achievement Awards, First prizes in Google audio and video recognition challenges, and best paper awards at numerous international conferences and journals.
All applicants should have (or expect to obtain) a first-class degree in a numerate discipline (mathematics, science or engineering) or MSc with Distinction (or 70% average) and a strong interest in pursuing research in this field. Additional experience which is relevant to the area of research is also advantageous.
IELTS Academic: 6.5 or above (or equivalent) with no sub-test of less than 6.
