Our Primary and Community Care (District Nursing) BSc (Hons) programme is designed to be responsive to the dynamic nature of policy, demographic change and technological development within the primary and community care setting, and will advance your ability to critically analyse and lead on innovation and change in the workplace.

Programme overview

Community-based care for children and families continues to be a priority at both local and national levels, reflecting government priorities to move from secondary to primary care, and evidence that shows that most care for children and families is best delivered at home.

A District Nurse (DN) needs high level clinical skills and an in-depth understanding of the context within which primary and community care is delivered. A DN also needs to understand how care is commissioned, who funds it and how they can influence these decisions. The programme will enable you to continue to develop your ability to display the values required in modern healthcare and within the NHS Constitution, including compassion, kindness, empathy, advocacy, good communication and teamwork skills, and respect for patients’ privacy, dignity and individuality.

The programme allows shared learning with practitioners from other specialities and draws on Surrey’s excellent research base within the School of Health Sciences. Students benefit from strong links with practice, and programmes are designed to be responsive to changing practice needs.

Programme structure

The structure of the programme allows you achieve 120 level 6 credits and the recordable specialist practice qualification of District Nurse in 52 weeks full time and 104 weeks part-time. The NMC Specialist Practice Standards require the student to attend the University (50 per cent theory) and to achieve work-based and practice related experience (50 per cent practice) on a supernumerary basis. A period of consolidated practice of ten weeks is also required to complete the Specialist Practice programme. You will be supported by a practice teacher (PT) and mentor in the clinical setting and you will have a personal tutor in the University. Your tutor will visit you in practice to discuss your progress with your PT and mentor and you’ll complete three progress assessments throughout the year. 

Module overview

You will be required to complete the following modules to achieve the specialist practice learning outcomes:

Primary and Community Care Policy (15 credits)

The module develops your understanding of the policy process and how it applies to your practice area. You will critique policies that affect your practice and consider how you might influence future policy development.

Safeguarding Children, Young People and Vulnerable Adults (15 credits)

The module explores safeguarding practice in relation to children, young people and vulnerable adults, highlighting strengths and weaknesses of current practice. Underpinning theories and concepts are examined and applied to practice.

Research for Professional Practice (30 credits)

This Module enables students to critically appraise research. Students will further develop skills to appraise evidence for health care and well-being, therefore enabling them to become competent at employing research and evidence based practice

V100 Community Practitioner Nurse Prescribing (15 credits)

The module equips you with the skills and knowledge to prescribe safely from the Nurses’ Formulary. You are required to pass the academic component of the module and also complete 18 hours of prescribing experience in practice.

Health Assessment (15 credits)

The module will enable the learner to develop comprehensive knowledge and understanding of health assessment from a multi – professional and interagency perspectives across health and social care domains

Application of Leadership and Management (15 credits)

This Module will prepare the practitioner to apply effective leadership to innovative service delivery .As well as examining current management theories, you’ll reflect on your own management style and that of others you work with.

Specialist Practice Portfolio (15 credits)

Relevant topics, such as cancer care, mental health and health promotion will be examined during this module. You’ll also develop the knowledge base needed to underpin your professional practice.

Awards and modes of study

On successful completion of the programme, you will exit with the award of BSc (Hons) Primary and Community Care and the recordable qualification of District Nurse.

The programme can be undertaken on a full or part-time basis according to University regulations.

Self-study hours

  • 150 hours per 15-credit module (30 hours taught)
  • 600 hours per 60-credit module (60 hours taught)

One year/ 12 months to achieve the BSc (Hons) Primary and Community Care and recordable qualification of Specialist Practitioner (DN) (full time) . Part-time the programme is 2 years or 24 months.

Entry requirements

Students will normally hold a previously accumulated credit volume of 120 FHEQ Level 5 credits and 120 FHEQ Level 4 credits. Students who do not meet these requirements should seek advice from the Faculty as it may not exclude you from applying. 

In addition to the overall programme entry requirements, students who undertake Specialist Practice normally receive sponsorship from a Primary Care Trust or organisation. The selection process involves partnership working between specialist tutors, practice teachers and Trust managers to ensure that the student meets the entry requirements. 

Students will need to be entered on parts one or two of the NMC Professional Register and will normally have at least two years’ post-registration experience.
