Critically acclaimed author Monica Ali to remain in post for an additional year

Celebrated author Monica Ali is to remain in her post as Distinguished Writer-in-Residence at the University of Surrey for an additional 12 months.

  • Popular series of master classes and one on one sessions set to continue helping to give students invaluable experience of working alongside an accomplished author.

Joining the University in 2015 as the institution’s first ever Distinguished Writer-in-Residence, the acclaimed author has shared her expertise with numerous undergraduate and postgraduate students in the School of English, helping to put them on the path to success.

In her role Monica, has helped students gain hands-on practical skills in creative writing and provided critical analysis and assistance on their work. Helping students develop their work further, Monica has led a series of popular Distinguished Writer-in Residence master classes which, due to high demand, are set to continue throughout 2017, alongside one-on-one Writing Surgery session’s  sharing with students her novel-writing capabilities and insight.

Monica will continue to bring to the role a wealth of literary experience, having written a number of award-winning novels including Brick Lane (which was short-listed for the Man Booker Prize), In the Kitchen and Untold Story. As a respected author in her field, Monica has been a guest editor of BBC Radio 4’s Today programme and a literary reviewer for the New York Times. Sharing her expertise she has been a Visiting Professor on the MFA course at Columbia University, New York, and has tutored on the novel writing MA at City University, London.

Bran Nicol, Head of the School of English and Languages at the University of Surrey, said: “I am delighted that Monica will be remaining in post for an additional year. She is a writer of truly international standing, whose work is an inspiration to our students. During her 12 months here she has provided invaluable insight and guidance to our students, helping them reach their full potential.”
