The Rt Hon Matt Hancock MP, Minister of State for Digital and Culture, visited the University of Surrey today (13 March).
The Minister and colleagues were welcomed to Surrey's 5G Innovation Centre by Professor Max Lu, President and Vice-Chancellor of the University and Professor Rahim Tafazolli, Director of 5GIC and Institute for Communication Systems.
The delegation visited the world-leading 5G Innovation Centre, which brings together leading academic expertise and major industry partners to define and develop a global 5G network that will radically change lives across the world.
Professor Rahim Tafazolli, Director of 5GIC and Institute for Communication Systems at the University of Surrey, said: “We are delighted that Minister of State for Digital and Culture, the Rt Hon Matt Hancock MP and colleagues were able to visit the University of Surrey today.
"The Government’s renewed focus in this sector demonstrates their commitment to the industry, helping to keep the UK at the forefront of 5G development. 5GIC industry members have already expressed their full support to the implementation of the Chancellor’s 5G ambition for the UK in terms of development and trials by the first quarter of 2018.
"At the University of Surrey we are well on the way to building a sustainable 5G network, which will have worldwide ramifications. 5G will provide the fabric of connectivity and revolutionise the potential to increase mobile broadband services, speed, capacity, coverage and mass connectivity of Internet of Things whilst using the same networks, changing not only the way we interact with technology but how we work and live.”
Minister of State for Digital and Culture Matt Hancock said: "The UK has an ambition to be a world leader in the development of 5G technology and it was fantastic to see the work underway at University of Surrey's 5G Innovation Centre.
"As we set out in our recent 5G Strategy, we will invest more than £1 billion to accelerate the development and uptake of next generation digital infrastructure - including full fibre and 5G - to help make the UK the best place to start and grow a digital business."
