Professor Paul Smith made World Fellow of international committee

Renowned University of Surrey Professor joins a select group of engineers and experts as he is named World Fellow of the International Committee of Composite Materials (ICCM).

Professor Paul Smith, Executive Dean of the Faculty for Engineering and Physical Sciences, has been given the prestigious award in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the field of composite materials through his work in research and development, his work in inspiring the next generation of composites engineers through his 30 years in education and other contributions to the field.

The ICCM is the premier international, non-governmental, not-for-profit organisation dedicated to sharing research and best practices in composite materials. Paul has served on the Executive Council of ICCM for 16 years including serving as President from 2013-2015.

Professor Smith said: “I am honoured to be recognised in this way and I would like to acknowledge the outstanding colleagues, students and collaborators with whom I have been fortunate enough to work during my academic career.”

Paul has worked in the composites field since his own PhD in the early 1980s.  Much of his research work has been carried out in collaboration with industry, focused towards impact as well as academic understanding. He has a particular interest in understanding damage and fracture behaviour and linking this to engineering design methods.  He is an author of more than 250 journal and conference papers, a former editor of Composites Part A (one of the leading journals in the field), a Fellow of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining and a Chartered Engineer.

He joins a select and illustrious group of engineers and composite materials experts who have previously been named World Fellows of ICCM; amongst those included is the former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Surrey, the late great Anthony Kelly
