Surrey improves its international standing in prestigious world university ranking

The University of Surrey has achieved its highest ever ranking in the renowned Shanghai Chinese Academic Ranking of World Universities. 

Rising an impressive 86 places since 2016 to 362, the University of Surrey is now one of the top 400 universities in the world cementing its reputation as a centre of excellence. Measuring six indicators including quality of research, the institution made considerable gains in the number of ‘highly cited researchers’ section jumping eight points showing the high calibre of research undertaken at the University of Surrey. 

Gains were also seen in citations in the science and social science fields.

Professor Max Lu, President and Vice-Chancellor of the University, said, “This fantastic result recognises the great efforts of Surrey staff and students in research and innovation. Research outputs play an important role in these metrics, so our performance demonstrates the world-leading excellence of our researchers.

“Our ambition is to become a global leader in higher education, and to build on our strong legacy of creating knowledge that leads to solutions for the challenges we face now and in the future. Our improved standing in these rankings is proof of our continued progress.”

This latest ranking adds to an already successful year for the University of Surrey which received a Gold award in the recent Teaching Excellence Framework and has maintained its top ten position in the prestigious Guardian League Table.

Global recognition of the high quality of teaching at Surrey was also acknowledged in the ShanghaiRankings Global Ranking of Academic Subjects with four academic programmes ranked in the Top 100 in the world including Hospitality and Tourism Management which attained sixth place globally.
