University of Surrey backs campaign to bring Santander bike scheme to Guildford
The University of Surrey has pledged £25,500 – the maximum it is allowed to pledge – to bring a bike hire scheme to Guildford, and it is now calling on the local community to help get the crowdfunding campaign over the finishing line.
The Santander Cycles University Challenge gives two institutions the opportunity to win £100,000 worth of funding for bikes and docking stations. The two universities that raise the highest percentage above their fundraising target will win the support from Santander to install the scheme on their campus.
The challenge allows and encourages participating universities to pledge up to a maximum of 50 per cent of its fundraising target, which for the University of Surrey is £25,500. The University is now calling on the local community to help it reach its £51,000 total.

The deadline for pledges is Friday 8 December.
Ed Nelson, Head of the University’s Transport Team, said: “This pledge, along with the generous support of many residents, students and staff, shows that there is wide support for this scheme in Guildford. We want to thank everyone who has supported us so far, whose support has taken us past 60 per cent of our total, which is phenomenal in just three weeks. However, we need a big push for the last two weeks to get us over the finishing line and make our town an even greener place to live and work.
“We would ask everyone to make a pledge, and if you have already done so, ask your friends and loved ones to consider making a contribution. Please back the bike!”
