University of Surrey wins 5th place in Hospitality, Leisure, Sport & Tourism by the Center for World University Rankings

The University of Surrey has been ranked fifth in the world by the Center for World University Rankings (CWUR) in Hospitality, Leisure, Sport & Tourism (HLST) out of more than 26,000 degree-granting institutions of higher education worldwide.

This award follows in the footsteps of the School being given a top-five ranking and five stars in this year's QS World University Rankings. The School of Hospitality and Tourism Management, which is currently ranked number one in both the Guardian University Guide 2017 and the Complete University Guide2017, has now been recognised for its world-class reputation for research in hospitality, tourism and events and is ranked in the top five globally for its publications.

The CWUR publishes the only global university ranking that measures the quality of education and training of students, as well as the prestige of the faculty members and the quality of their research, without relying on surveys and university data submissions.

Professor Graham Miller, Executive Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, and Professor of Sustainability in Business, said:

“This second top five world ranking reinforces the proud tradition hospitality has at Surrey, as many of the global leaders of the industry studied with us. It reinforce our world-class reputation for our research in hospitality, tourism and events, and shows that we offer our students, stimulating and industry-relevant programmes. This is why we are very proud to be continuing this tradition and welcome this ranking as recognition of our continued success as a global leader in our field.”

Professor Caroline Scarles, Head of School of Hospitality and Tourism Management, said:

“The School of Hospitality and Tourism Management is very proud to be announced as a top five institution in our field by the CWUR. This, alongside other national and international rankings, secures our position as a global leader in hospitality and tourism. We look forward to continuing to work in partnership with many industry and academic leaders to deliver world-leading research, and to providing innovative programmes to our students in creative, stimulating environments that encourage them to strive to become the next generation of leaders in these exciting industries.”

In addition to providing consultation for governments and universities, the CWUR provides authoritative global university rankings, which are trusted by students, academics, university administrators, and government officials from around the world.
