Professor David Sampson, photonics pioneer, appointed Vice-Provost of Research and Innovation
Professor David Sampson to become Surrey’s Vice-Provost of Research and Innovation, a role which leads the development of the University’s research strategy and takes responsibility for the delivery of the overall research portfolio
- Professor Sampson is currently at the University of Western Australia in Perth, where he is Head of the Optical and Biomedical Engineering Laboratory and Director of the Centre for Microscopy, Characterisation and Analysis
- He is a Fellow of the IEEE and during his career has been awarded a number of coveted prizes including the Western Australian Innovator of the Year award.
The University of Surrey confirms the appointment of Professor David Sampson as Vice-Provost Research and Innovation.
Professor Sampson joins the University of Surrey from his current role at the University of Western Australia in Perth, where he is Head of the Optical and Biomedical Engineering Laboratory and Director of the Centre for Microscopy, Characterisation and Analysis. He has previously held positions at the University of Melbourne and the University of Kent.
With over twenty-five years’ research experience in industry and academia in photonics, optics, and microscopy and their application to communications, sensors and biomedicine, Professor Sampson is an acclaimed expert in his field and has been awarded a number of coveted prizes including the Western Australian Innovator of the Year award. He is a Fellow of IEEE.

Professor Sampson will take up the role on 15 January 2018.
