University of Surrey signs MoU with major leading Chinese university
The University of Surrey has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with one of China’s leading higher education institutions, Xi’an Jiaotong University (XJTU).
- Surrey partners with Xi’an Jiaotong University, a member of the C9 League, which is an alliance of nine elite universities in China (analogous to the Ivy League universities in the United States)
- Partnership allows students the opportunity to study at both institutions
- Both universities reaffirm their commitment to further strengthen collaborations in key research areas
The MoU cements the relationship between the two leading institutions and will create new opportunities for joint educational work, allowing students to study at both Surrey and XJTU. Academic staff will have the opportunity to jointly supervise students and also work together on faculty and exchange programmes.
The partnership recognises current collaborations in the fields of energy and environment, biomedicine, and nuclear physics, while confirming the intention to broaden activity into other academic areas including space science, telecommunications, and nanotechnology.
Professor Max Lu, President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Surrey, said: “Collaborating with Xi’an Jiaotong University is a significant strategic partnership for Surrey, and one that resonates strongly with our internationalisation plans. The MoU is testament to our ambitions to position the institution as a world-class university in Guildford.”
Professor Zhang Maizeng, Chairman of the University Board of Xi’an Jiaotong University, said: “We are delighted with this partnership. XJTU has a 120-year strong tradition of excellence and innovation in engineering and technological research. We look forward to furthering our collaboration with Surrey across a number of key areas such as energy, telecommunications and medical sciences.”
Xi'an Jiaotong University is one of the oldest universities in China, with origins dating back to 1896. The University is based in Central Xi'an, the ancient capital of China and home to the Terracotta Warriors. XJTU is a comprehensive research-oriented university with a focus on science and engineering. The university is a member of the ‘211 and 985’ Chinese Government projects, selected to be developed into a global first-class university.
