The Building Research Communities competition.
We have welcomed submissions from our postgraduate researchers (PGRs), early career researchers (ECRs), supervisors, PGR directors, academic and professional services staff.
We have invited bids for amounts of up to £5,000 to propose activities and initiatives that will support and strengthen our research environment and sense of community for PGRs and ECRs.
An objective of the University’s Research Strategy is to improve our research culture and infrastructure. As PGRs and ECRs are the foundation of a vibrant research environment, this competition seeks to encourage activities that will develop sustainable and lively cultures that will help our PGRs and ECRs flourish.

Juliet Chambers-Coe (ECR - GSA)
A series of ‘In Conversation with…’ events throughout the academic year, each centring on an aspect or discipline specific to one of the 4 GSA departments. Each event team will bring together lecturers, ECRs, teaching fellows and PGRs, to present a session on a disciplinary or inter-disciplinary aspect of their practice and/or research in conversation with an invited guest.
Olivia Luijnenburg (PGR - School of Health Sciences)
The launch of two regular activities to support the PGR community within the School of Health Sciences, with a particular focus on those who have different working hours and care responsibilities. To ensure they build a stronger, more inclusive community, the events will present a flexible and supportive approach. A semi-formal weekly lunch meeting for PGR’s to check in and keep each other updated, raise topics they are struggling with, and listen to an internal or external speaker with Q&A. The second, is a monthly writing/reading session, where PGR’s can exchange knowledge and experiences.
Dr Daniel Horton (Lecturer - School of Veterinary Medicine)
The project includes three PGR/ECR Sandpit events to innovate and engage cross-faculty PGR/ECR networking to strengthen Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) research community at Surrey. Ideas generated will contribute directly to current and future funding calls, including a Doctoral Training Programme Grant to ensure the sustainability of our NTD Research community. The project involves an innovative 'productive confrontation' session in which misgivings between disciplines will be explored with entertaining and fun debate, to break down barriers.
Dr Fabio Fasoli (ECR - Psychology)
The launch of initiatives to address the current struggles sexualities researchers have communicating and exchanging ideas with colleagues across different disciplines and departments. To increase occasions within the University for ERCs and PGRs to meet and create a broader Sexuality Studies community. The two new events, a one-day event open to all interested in the area, and a writing retreat for researchers, represent a starting point for an interdisciplinary community around sexuality studies to act as a springboard for a planned proposal for a Sexuality Studies centre, currently being processed.
Prof. Sam Aryee (PGR Director - Surrey Business School)
Four diverse activities to support the Surrey Business School research community.
A data analysis workshop, delivered by leading methodologists. PhD student-led seminars, empowering PGRs to invite established external academics/speakers to give talks on contemporary developments in the world of business and the resulting research opportunities. Travel grants to attend local conferences, to further subsidise SBS current contributions. And a book prize for PhD students who excel in teaching and research, based on student evaluations and research publications.
Dr Paul Hanna (PGR Director - School of Hospitality and Tourism Management)
Support three PGRs in SHTM to participate in the first activity of the newly formed tripartite between the University of Surrey, Sun Yat-sen University in China, and University of Queensland in Australia. The workshop will be this summer and will build new communities of research with two of the world’s leading providers. The aim of this partnership is to establish a Global Centre of Research Excellence.
