Congratulations to George for being highly commended at the awards
Colin Howard wrote the following in support of this nomination:
George is an enthusiastic and highly motivated student of Civil Engineering. He chose at the beginning of his Year 2 to pursue the option to spend his PTY overseas and working with Arup. This was a challenging placement and he needed to adapt not only to the technical world of the design of novel tall structures but to the cultural and very different world of work in Hong Kong. He excelled in all aspects of his placement and life in Hong Kong and took full advantage of the tremendous opportunities.
I have decided to nominate George for the award principally on the basis of his exceptionally professional approach to all aspects of the placement and his time with Arup. He was challenged with ground breaking analysis and design of some iconic tall building structures and worked effectively alongside the Chinese engineering team. He became truly embedded and part of the team – albeit with a significant language barrier – he took lessons in Cantonese.
I therefore commend George Butler to you as a student who has exemplified the value/benefits of PTY in the development of his professional, personal, technical, language and cultural skills. As an indicator of this, on his return, George was asked by the Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE) to present a seminar on his experience at a meeting at the University which was attended by local engineers, staff and fellow students.
