This Wednesday (5 July) will see the University of Surrey host the world’s first 5G Digital Gaming Initiative thanks to £1.75m investment from Enterprise M3 Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP). The initiative follows the creation of the world’s largest Open Innovation 5G Test Bed at the University of Surrey and the first “Step Out” 5G SME access test facility based at the Basingstoke Business Innovation Hub.
The new hub will be officially launched at the University of Surrey’s annual G3 Futures: Galvanising Guildford Games conference on 5 July. This will give the internationally-renowned Guildford and Aldershot digital gaming cluster a lead introduction to the University of Surrey latest 5G mobile phone and VR content production technology.
G3 Futures is led by the Centre for Vision Speech and Signal Processing (CVSSP) together with Digital Media Arts at the University of Surrey at the University of Surrey, law firm Charles Russell Speechlys and UKIE (the UK industry body for interactive entertainment).
G3 was launched in summer 2015 to foster greater collaboration across the local games industry and to promote Guildford as a key UK games hub. It brings together games developers and industry specialists in Guildford and the South East, providing an opportunity for local gaming companies to hear about the latest industry innovations and discuss issues impacting the South East and Guildford-based gaming community.
The investment from Enterprise M3 LEP, will give local games and creative companies the chance to participate in a world first development, using 5G capability for ultra-fast, virtual reality games. The project will provide regional Digital Gaming businesses access to the 5G Innovation Centre (5GIC) and to nationally leading facilities at the University’s Centre for Vision Speech and Signal Processing (CVSSP).
These include the state-of-the-art 5G Test Bed network and CVSSP’s unique 4D performance capture studio, integrating optical motion capture and multiple camera UltraHD video which enables video-realistic content production for VR, games and film.
The G3 Futures programme for 5 July includes speakers and panellists from the local games industry (Figment Productions, Ikinema, Supermassive, Focal Point VR, nDreams, Moov2, Rocketdesk and 22 Cans). Participants will have the opportunity to take part in open panel discussions on Virtual reality technologies and on how to support talent and start-ups in Surrey.
