Celebration of the life of Reginald-Smith Brindle

The Department of Music and Media hosts event celebrating the life of the University's first Professor of Music.

The Department of Music and Media, in association with the International Guitar Centre, celebrated the life of Reginald-Smith Brindle on Saturday 4th November with a celebratory event held in PATS Studio One.

Reginald Smith-Brindle (1917-2003) was The University of Surrey’s first Professor of Music. He was a distinguished composer, a dedicated pedagogue, and an important writer on 20th Century music.

The event commenced with a concert featuring the guitar music of Reginald Smith-Brindle Professor, followed by a fascinating lecture from Professor Steven Thachuk of California State University Northridge and the International Guitar Research Archive. Professor Thachuk, guitarist and musicologist, has made a close study of Smith-Brindle’s music.

The Department of Music and Media were delighted to welcome music alumni and the family of Reginald Smith-Brindle, who were very moved by the occasion and took the opportunity to share a number of photos from his life.

All who attended unanimously agreed the event provided a lovely opportunity to share anecdotes from the life of Reginald Smith-Brindle and for alumni to reminisce on their own time at Surrey.
