The bells rang out across Guildford on Saturday to mark the 50th anniversary of the signing of the University’s Charter and founding of Battersea Polytechnic, our predecessor institution, 125 years ago.
The University of Surrey Society of Change Ringers celebrated the occasion with an eight-hour relay in churches across the town, including Guildford Cathedral and St Nicolas Church. It coincided with a University open day, a wonderful way to show off our history to the several thousand prospective students and their families.
The night before, there was a peal of bells at St Mary’s Church in Battersea in tribute to the foundations on which the University is built.
The bell-ringing kicked off our 50th anniversary celebrations and continues with a procession and thanksgiving ceremony on Saturday 22 October. Along with our Chancellor, HRH The Duke of Kent, we will be joined by alumni, civic partners and community friends as we process along Guildford High Street, led by the Guildford Friary Band.
