Department of Politics REF 21 Results

Overall, 83% of the research submitted by our Department was rated as being world-leading or of internationally excellent quality.  

  • In terms of our research outputs, 75% were of world-leading or internationally excellent quality with 32% achieving the highest level of recognition (4*), for their originality, significance, and rigour. 

 

  • On impact, 100% of our impact case studies were considered as having an outstanding or very considerable impact in terms of reach and significance. 

 

  • The vast majority of our research environment (85%) was judged to be conducive to producing research of internationally excellent quality and enabling very considerable impact in terms of its vitality and sustainability. 

 

Our REF 2021 results demonstrate the ongoing and impactful influence the Department of Politics has from area-specific studies ranging from the UK and Europe to the US, to political philosophy, to grand strategy, localism and populism, at national and international levels. We’re a vibrant Department that publishes at a consistently high level, takes pride in the impactful and relevant nature of our research, and provides a dynamic and supportive research environment for all our staff, our students, and our associates.
