Dr Arman Sarvarian served as a judge ad hoc of the European Court of Human Rights

The European Court of Human Rights delivered an advisory opinion on the 29th of May 2020 in reply to a request from the Armenian Constitutional Court. Dr Arman Sarvarian, Senior Lecturer at University of Surrey School of Law, served as a judge ad hoc on the panel of judges delivering the opinion and issued a Concurring Opinion of his own.

The case concerned the standards to be applied under Article 7 (no punishment without law) of the European Convention on Human Rights in interpreting and applying an article of the Armenian Penal Code making it a criminal offence to overthrow the constitutional order, in the context of ongoing criminal proceedings against the former President of Armenia.
