Surrey has the right chemistry for KTP

The Department of Chemistry has secured a three-year Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) with market leader Advanced Engineering.

Surrey researchers Dr Scott Turner and Dr David Watson are applying their specialist knowledge of chemistry to the development of more efficient and effective formulations used in heating, ventilation and air-conditioning systems.

The three-year KTP project was successfully secured with Basingstoke-based Advanced Engineering with the support of the business development team in Surrey’s Research & Enterprise Support department, and is part-funded by the TSB. The market leader in its field, with a global client base, Advanced Engineering formulates and supplies high quality speciality chemical products for the air conditioning and refrigeration trade.

The project will draw on Surrey’s knowledge of intermolecular interactions and the interactions of molecules in liquids or gases with solid surfaces, and apply this knowledge to industrial and commercial applications. In turn, key learnings and commercial outcomes from the project will be embedded back into teaching and research at the University.

“This is an exciting opportunity to work closely with a successful company and to be instrumental in bringing new products to market,” said Dr Scott Turner.

Dr David Watson added: “The partnership will allow us, as academics, to see the ‘real world’ applications of the fundamental chemical processes that we usually research and teach.”

The KTP is now looking to recruit an Associate to run the project – a high-calibre graduate, based at Advanced Engineering, who will drive the strategic project and facilitate the transfer of knowledge.
