University launches an Emergency Student Support Appeal and Surrey alumni answer the call
The University of Surrey launches an Emergency Student Support Appeal to help students affected by Covid-19 and the response of our alumni community has been heart-warming.
Covid-19 is affecting every corner of society, including Surrey students who have found themselves facing hardship as a result of the virus. This week the University of Surrey launched an Emergency Student Support Appeal to help protect vulnerable students who are being hardest hit by this crisis.
The appeal will help those students facing unanticipated financial hardship due to the pandemic. Many are unable to return home following government advice. This might be due to international travel restrictions, family members with underlying health conditions, family estrangement or those students who are presenting symptoms themselves. Some have had their work placement year cut short but are still committed to paying rent. The appeal will help students with daily living costs, and other financial challenges.
Vice-Chancellor Max Lu says ‘I am learning daily of students who are facing hardship due to Covid-19. We need to act with haste to help those that have found themselves in a vulnerable position. The launch of the Emergency Student Support Appeal enables us to stand together and show our students that we are ready to answer their call for help. Thank you to everyone who has already given. We are fortunate to have such a kind and caring community of donors.’
Within the first few days of launching the appeal over 200 of Surrey’s alumni community have generously donated. The speed of the response ensures that the University’s Student Support Team can get straight to work supporting those most in need. There are many more Surrey students that require help and the Emergency Student Support Appeal will enable the University to safeguard vulnerable students during the Covid-19 crisis.
