University of Surrey joins Universities UK International’s (UUKi) campaign to increase the number of international opportunities for students

The University of Surrey is pleased to announce that we will be joining 54 other universities to participate in the Go International: Stand Out campaign.

Universities UK International have launched this three-year national campaign to increase the number of UK-domiciled undergraduate students who study, work or volunteer overseas for two or more weeks during their studies.

All UK universities are being asked to join the Stand out Campaign by pledging to undertake certain actions to meet the outward mobility target of doubling the percentage of UK-domiciled, full-time, first degree, undergraduate students who have an international placement as part of their university programme by 2020. The current figure is just over six per cent and the aim is to reach 13 per cent.

Increasing the number of international placements is highly beneficial for students, as evidence highlights that international placements can increase academic achievements and career prospects.

Dr Annette Kratz, Head Europe and International Mobility at the University said:

"At Surrey we are going to focus on creating additional summer school opportunities at our international partners, especially for students from disadvantaged backgrounds. We are also working on recording more systematically the short-term outward mobility that already occurs at Surrey for example among our doctoral students and in the School of Health Sciences. Surrey Business School is planning to triple the number of students who go out on exchange."

Prominent public figures have endorsed the campaign, such as Jo Johnson, Minister of State for Universities, Science, Research and Innovation who said:

We know that students who have experience of studying, working and volunteering abroad have better educational and employment outcomes. Employers value the skills that students develop through these placements, including language skills and cultural awareness.

He also added:

At the same time universities can build partnerships with other institutions around the world, facilitating the exchange of research and teaching. That’s why we’re working with the higher education sector to promote outward mobility and the benefits it brings young people, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds. I thoroughly support the Go International: Stand Out campaign to get more young people interested in an overseas placement and would encourage universities and employers to get involved.”
