What you will study
Our new and innovative MFA in Acting builds on the success of GSA’s current postgraduate course by extending the intensive training currently offered on our one-year MA Acting course.
Our MFA Acting course is highly selective and intensive. You will train for four semesters over two years, taking classes in acting, voice, movement and professional development, exploring a wide range of theatre traditions and performance styles in rehearsal projects and public productions.
This unique course is led by expert teachers with extensive first-hand experience in the professional theatre sector in both the UK and the US.
Our campus boasts great transport links to London, so you’ll benefit from GSA’s close proximity to the heart of UK theatre, London’s West End.

Academic year structure
The Guildford School of Acting (GSA) delivers its provision across three teaching blocks, within the University of Surrey’s existing semester structure.
Modules listed are indicative, reflecting the information available at the time of publication. Please note that modules may be subject to teaching availability, student demand and/or class size caps.
The University operates a credit framework for all taught programmes based on a 15-credit tariff. Modules can be either 15, 30, 45 or 60 credits, and additionally for some masters dissertations, 90 credits.
The structure of our programmes follows clear educational aims that are tailored to each programme. These are all outlined in the programme specifications which include further details such as the learning outcomes:

Learning and disability
We have two services, Academic Skills and Development and the Disability and Neurodiversity Service which can help develop your learning.
Academic Skills and Development
Academic Skills and Development is a learning space in the Library where our learning development team is based. It comprises dedicated Student Learning Advisers and Information Skills Librarians who can help you develop your academic and research skills, including writing, presenting, revision and critical thinking.

Disability and Neurodiversity Service
The University’s Disability and Neurodiversity Service supports students with disabilities, long-term health conditions, specific learning differences (such as dyslexia and dyspraxia) and other neurodiverse conditions (including autism spectrum and attention deficit disorder).
If you tell us about any conditions and register with us, we can give you appropriate support during your studies.
We can arrange exam and learning support adjustments, give advice on applications for the Disabled Students' Allowance, and test you for dyslexia and dyspraxia. We can also offer regular study skills and mentoring support.
English language support
Our English Language Support Programme (ELSP) provides tailored English language support during your studies. It is particularly valuable to students who speak English as a second or additional language, but native speakers are also welcome.
A minimum of a 2:2 UK honours degree, or a recognised equivalent international qualification.
Applicants who can demonstrate exceptional talent, and can satisfy the panel of their ability to successfully complete the course, may also be considered. Variations will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

The University of Surrey recognises that many students enter their higher education course with valuable knowledge and skills developed through a range of professional, vocational and community contexts. If this applies to you, a process called recognition of prior learning (RPL) may allow you to enter your course at a point appropriate to your previous learning and experience, or to join the start of a course without the formal entry requirements. This means that you may be exempt from certain elements of study in the course for which you have applied and be awarded credit based on your previous qualifications/experience. There are restrictions on RPL for some courses and fees may be payable for certain claims.

- These fees apply to students commencing study in the academic year 2020-21 only. Fees for new starters are reviewed annually.
- If you are on a two-year full-time MFA course, the annual fee is payable in Year 1 and Year 2 of the course.
There are associated costs with this programme:
- Production expenses: £175-350 - Portfolio, London Showcase and public production photographs
- Safety equipment and/or uniform: £180 approx. - Uniform including specialist footwear and boneprop
- UK-based activity: £100 approx. - Theatre trips - students should aim to see some live theatre throughout the course of their programme
- Books/stationery/admin: £60
Grand total: £515 - 690
Students may wish to apply for Spotlight (including graduates casting list) and Equity membership - £350 approximately. During the course of their programme, they may also wish to join the GSA Students' Union Society - £5 per annum.
Students are offered a week’s training in Stage Combat - The Academy of Performance Combat basic training - during their first academic year. The cost of attending the course is included in their University fees, but students are required to pay for the examination fee, currently £30. Opportunities for advanced training may also be available to students – in these cases additional charges would apply.
All students at GSA are encouraged to attend productions of their fellow students’ work to enrich their learning experience and give opportunities for critical analysis. These are public events for which students will be charged a reduced ticket price of £5. Some productions will be free to attend. Within the course of an academic year, a student might expect to attend around 25 productions.
