Pre-sessional 12 weeks (PS12)
If you have achieved an overall IELTS Academic score of 1.0 band below the required level for your degree programme, and each skill is no lower than 1.0 below the individual component score for your programme, we will accept successful completion of a twelve-week pre-sessional course as a condition of entry, without the need to re-take any external language tests.
This is a rigorous academic English preparation course designed to take students up to the level of English ability and skill required at Surrey. There are classes in different types of academic assignments, a range of reading and listening activities, speaking practice and a final exam assessment. Students have access to all university facilities and receive strong support from expert staff including individual tutorials and constructive feedback.
On successful completion of PS12, students will have developed their:
- Ability to write in an appropriate academic style
- Research and referencing skills, including adopting a critical approach to data
- Lecture listening and note-taking skills
- Speaking and academic presentation skills
- Reading efficiency
- Academic vocabulary
- Ability to work independently and in groups
- Confidence in their own ability to study in English
- Strategies to deal with the demands of a degree course in English.
Minimum entry requirements
The table above shows the minimum requirements for entry onto PS12 for students who need 6.5 overall with no lower than 6.0 in each component. For students who are required to have a higher IELTS Academic score, the minimum entry levels for all pre-sessional courses will also be higher.
If you require a CAS for a Tier 4 visa you will need to supply a UKVI IELTS report.
