Approval of PhDs

The QAA equates the design / delivery of the postgraduate research programme as the supervision of the research students and ensuring that the monitoring of the students’ progress and student support is effective and will contribute to the outcomes for the students.

There are two types of PhD that could be approved:

  • PhD with taught elements (e.g. practitioner degrees)
  • Research-only PhDs.

PhDs with taught elements are considered as postgraduate research taught programmes and therefore need to be considered through the usual validation process.

Research-only programmes can be considered through the PhD approval process. This follows the structure within the Approval Process Flow Chart (PDF).
