Subject-specific activities

Year 12 taster days

New for 2018, we are pleased to offer a selection of subject-specific taster days for Year 12 College and Sixth Form students.

Participants will experience the excellent teaching and facilities available at the University of Surrey, whilst exploring their chosen subject further. As well as academic sessions, there will be plenty of opportunity to engage with our Student Ambassadors to find out what studying here is really like. The day is free to attend and lunch is provided. Travel bursaries may be available for eligible students and all applications will be assessed against our eligibility criteria. You can find out more about our eligibility criteria here. Participants should be working at ABB level and may be required to be taking a particular subject at A-level or equivalent to attend the day.

The rise of popularity in social media over the last decade has drastically changed the way we communicate with one another. You’ll explore the link between social media and crime and how social media is changing the way crimes are committed in modern times. While you’re with us you’ll consider aspects of both Criminology and Sociology by taking part in academic sessions and engaging current students.

Applicants for this taster day should be working at ABB level (A Level or equivalent).

Closing date Tuesday 26 June (we expect a high volume of interest for this day, therefore applications may close early).

Key societal debates surrounding us today, around fake news, the Facebook data breach, online trolling, or young people’s media experiences – are all reasons why studying media and communication in contemporary societies is so important. Our taster day offers an introduction to our BSc in Media and Communication degree which is a cutting-edge, intensive and well-rounded social science degree in the study of contemporary media and communications in global, digital societies. The day will equip students to experience a taster of what contemporary mediated communications is all about, focusing on cases and concepts on everything from the internet and platform power to young people and mediated cultures. The course is proud to be both broad-based in its incorporation of a wide-range of media forms and cultures, and simultaneously cutting-edge in its inclusion of sociological critiques of the very latest of technological changes, including platform societies and big data. And like the course, we plan our Taster Day to give you insights into current topics in media and communication, and some insights into the broader history of the field. So, come join us in Guildford this September, to get a taster of the critical role of media and communication in the world today!

Applicants for this taster day should be working at ABB level (A Level or equivalent).

    Closing date Sunday 19 August
