"There were three factors I took into account when I chose the University of Surrey. The first was its high location in the league tables. The second was the personalised prospectus; that was a really nice touch. The third was its brilliant Open Day; it was here, as an undergraduate, that I remember asking for advice on taking a Master’s degree after my Bachelor’s.
Mathematics has always been a strong subject for me and I thoroughly enjoy it. Moreover, as a STEM subject, it’s a strong career choice too.
At the end of each semester, when I have four modules’ worth of material playing around in my head. It feels, just for a moment, like I know all the mathematics there is to know. And then I start the new semester, and I’m back to square one.
"Mathematics is both a fantastic model of reality and a way to escape from it."
It can be used to determine the vibrations of a string, the dynamics of a stock market or the motion of the planets. Or it can simply be explored.
My advice to people considering enrolling on my programme is to work hard in your first year, or the second year will bite you back.
To cram if you must, but know that all that you memorise will be gone by the end of the week. That the tests do matter - A high mark in a test is a cushion for your exam. To read your notes, many times through, and really know the subject. This will get you through any exam surprises. That unassessed coursework is nearly always harder/longer than any test or exam, so don’t worry if you can’t do it first time. And finally, download past exam papers for all your possible future modules."
