"I have always been fascinated by language both fiction and non-fiction and how different people speak all kinds of languages. The English Literature and French programme at the University of Surrey just seemed like the perfect combination for me as I have always wanted to be fluent in French and I also just love reading.
The University of Surrey particularly stood out for me because it is very pastoral. You are part of a community in a caring environment.
My lecturers are all very supportive and they have an open door policy which means that I can go to them at any time to ask questions. My departments are both in the School of Literature and Languages and I have found that they communicate really well together which is useful for me.
English literature and French complement each other because within both there is a need to understand theory and history. For example, the French revolution is not only key to French history but also to Romanticism within literature. A lot of the terminology I might learn in French in terms of grammar, I can then apply when I am cross reading a text or a poem in English.
I have access to many excellent resources on my course. I spent a lot of time in the languages labs where there are books, films and listening exercises. There is also so much available in the library. They have numerous copies of books we study in English which means often I save money as I do not need to buy the books myself.
Outside of my course, I really enjoyed getting involved in the cheerleading team where I met lots of friends. I am also involved in a church. It has lots going on and there is a student meal on Wednesdays where we all come together. It is nice to meet families and different types of people from Guildford. The university offers the Language and Culture Exchange Scheme on a Tuesday evening, where you can go and meet other people who are studying French or who are French and chat to them in a social environment.
The University of Surrey is such a happy environment with people who care about you. You will feel supported at a university which is improving year on year and has a really good reputation that is up there with some of the top universities in the country."
