"Studying at the university has had a positive influence on both my personal and professional life."

Course
Accounting and Finance BSc (Hons)
Entry year
2015

While looking for my perfect university I had a set of criteria that needed to be met; the learning environment, the campus and quality of the programme all counted. The University of Surrey has always held a reputation to deliver exceptional quality education, leveraging the latest technology to advance the learning experience.

The campus is picturesque, the Sports Park is a short distance from the main campus, and lecture rooms are closely positioned to one another on campus. For me, Surrey has the ideal campus! I achieved A*’s at college, and the University offered me the Chancellor Scholarship award which was a great incentive and demonstrated that the university both inspires and rewards performance.

When choosing a course I knew that Accounting and Finance was the perfect choice for me because I’d always excelled at business, economics, and math subjects at college. This programme felt like the natural next step. The Accounting and Finance course at Surrey is an accredited programme and gives exemptions towards professional qualifications such as ACA, ACCA, and CIMA upon the completion of my degree.

So far I have had fantastic opportunities to participate in extracurricular activities such as the economics society, as well as being given the responsibility as the final year course representative. And of course, the nightlife at university has been a highlight with many nightclubs and bars in town along with many events held at the Students' Union club Rubix.

Studying at the university has had a positive influence on both my personal and professional life. I started university in 2015 and had very little work experience and I have been able to develop my core knowledge and skill set and pursue a career in investment banking which I’ve always dreamed of.

In my second year, I did an Internship at Barclays Bank and then a professional training year at Morgan Stanley Investment Bank. I’ve now been lucky enough to secure an investment banking role following my graduation this year. I have always found the module content of the Accounting and Finance programme to be engaging, applicable to the real world of business, and highly valuable in the workplace environment.

"I would definitely recommend undertaking a placement year, the learning experience is different from anything you would have experienced before!"

My placement at Morgan Stanley Investment Bank involved a steep learning curve, going into banking meant there was a level of high pressure and expectations. The placement was the best professional experience I could have asked for, I was able to gain exposure to investment banking operations and understand what it takes to be successful in such an innovative, competitive, and fast-paced work environment. I would definitely recommend undertaking a placement year, the learning experience is different from anything you would have experienced before!

Accounting and Finance at the University of Surrey has given me the opportunity to fulfil my potential and pursue the career I had only but dreamed of when starting in 2015. The knowledge and skills I’ve gained are extremely relevant and I know that I’m going to have a large vault of knowledge that will act as a strong foundation for me to excel in my new work environment."
