How are you coping during the Covid-19 crisis?

I’m about to finish my second year and although the current circumstances don’t affect me as much as people who’re working, I’ve still needed to adapt to the situation. Since 23 March, I’ve been learning online instead of face-to-face lectures and laboratory practicals, which wasn’t easy to begin with, but has gotten a lot better as time’s passed.

How has Covid-19 affected your studies?

I’ve had to adapt quite a lot! I’ve become more organised and disciplined in my studies, and I’ve created a personalised timetable, scheduling times to study, eat, rest, exercise and sleep. We all need to take responsibility of our learning and try our best to overcome this.

How have you found online learning?

Moving to online learning has had its pros and cons. Teaching staff use virtual learning to give lectures and hour-long tutorials, which I’ve found beneficial as you can interact more with lecturers and I feel comfortable asking questions. We’ve also been given lecture recordings that we can watch whenever we want.

Talking to my friends, it’s clear that some prefer this way of learning, while others would rather have face-to-face sessions. Although it would be my preference to do exams in a more traditional way, overall, I’ve enjoyed the experience.

Do you have any advice for other students?

Communicate with your lecturers and peers, check your emails, keep track of what course content you’ve covered, what coursework needs completing and what exams are coming up.

How do you feel about online learning next semester?

I think online teaching is a good idea for next semester, but I know I’d benefit from in-class teaching. A combined approach would be perfect. I believe that the University is trying it’s best to help students like me.
