"From the state-of-the-art facilities to the convenient location, Surrey was the perfect choice for me. University has been a life changing experience."

Entry year
2015

"Surrey had been my first choice of university for as long as I can remember, so when I was offered a place with Surrey Business School (SBS), I didn’t need to give it a second thought as to what I would do next.

I’ll never forget the friendliness of the staff and students when I visited campus for an open day – Surrey felt like home almost immediately. For my first year, I lived in Millennium House on the University’s Stag Hill site. My first impression was the surprisingly large amount of space I had to live and study in, and I also loved how easily I was able to see my friends. Living on campus meant I always felt involved.

When I first started at university, I was incredibly shy and had next to no social skills. However, my involvement in sports clubs, societies and the various events held throughout the year helped me to become much more confident. Every Tuesday, I co-host Hari’s Challenge (the University of Surrey’s very own quiz) and I’m now also part of Stag Radio as well as a frequent user of the squash courts at Surrey Sports Park.

Another major plus point of life at Surrey is how accessible Guildford is, both by train and road. This has been so important for my placement year when I’ve had to drive up north to take part in events. In the town centre, there are also multiple different clubs and gig venues, as well as places like Guildford Lido for swimming and Guildford Spectrum, which has fun things to do like bowling and ice skating.

"My duties and responsibilities while on placement were the biggest driver for my own personal development, and I cannot emphasise the value of doing a professional training placement enough."

When choosing Surrey, I knew that the placement opportunities available at SBS would give me a head start for my future career. I completed my Professional Training placement with Stanley Black and Decker at their UK and ROI head office. The work I carried out ranged from arranging and sorting financial hierarchies, to managing my own project, budget and team – a highlight for me. My duties and responsibilities while on placement were the biggest driver for my own personal development, and I cannot emphasise the value of doing a professional training placement enough. The experience I gained during my year with Stanley Black and Decker has given me the confidence to network outside of marketing, helping me to make contacts in HR, sales and demand planning.

From the state-of-the-art facilities to the convenient location, Surrey was the perfect choice for me. University has been a life changing experience."
