"I chose Surrey because of the good experiences I had on the open day, it was really helpful to see the campus, accommodation, facilities and hear more about the way the course works at Surrey. Also, because of the opportunity to undertake a Professional Training placement.

I had wanted to study law throughout secondary school with the eventual aim of studying the BPTC and becoming a barrister. My career goals have since changed, partly because of my placement experience.

I enjoy the opportunity to take part in mooting competitions alongside my programme, this has helped to improve my public speaking, confidence and ability to analyse legal problems. It has also been an additional thing to add to my CV and talk about in interviews. The facilities have also been improved this year – there is now a dedicated mooting room for competitions.

I lived in Bellerby Court in my first year and the experience was unforgettable.

I am part of the law society mooting team and the equestrian society. The social interaction stemming from these societies has enriched my University experience and the organisation, teamwork and competitions has given me skills in taking responsibility.

The best things about Surrey are the Sports Park and the proximity to central London.

I undertook a Professional Training placement at Shoosmiths LLP. I worked as a Case Handler in a banking litigation team. The work involved taking calls from clients, customers and other legal professionals, which quickly gave me exposure to the litigation process and made me more confident. I also gained experience in issuing court proceedings and warrants, trying to resolve without initiating legal proceedings, billing files, instructing counsel for court hearings and providing assistance to solicitors. I undertook the role of Vulnerable Adult Go-To person which involved identifying and helping to deal with vulnerable customers in line with FCA guidelines. I also gained a great deal of exposure to corporate clients through this placement.

My placement gave me invaluable work experience and has generally improved my prospects for after graduation.

My greatest achievement of University so far has been winning the first round of the OUP and BPP mooting competition – this demonstrated my personal progress throughout my time at Surrey.

Since starting University I have improved my ability to deal with new situations and understand how to interpret and apply the law, rather than just being merely interested in studying it."
