LEVEL OF STUDY
Alan is the winner of our Special Recognition Award in the Vice-Chancellor’s Alumni Awards. Alan started his long association with Surrey in 1962 when he studied for his BSc in Chemical Engineering at Battersea College of Technology, the forerunner to the University of Surrey. In 1968, he came to Guildford to take a role as a part-time lecturer and complete his PhD… and, 53 years later, he’s as passionate as ever to continue teaching.
Marie Enfrin studied for a PhD in Chemical and Process Engineering jointly with the University of Surrey and Deakin University in Australia, researching how microplastics lead to pollution. She’s now working as a postdoctoral research fellow at Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) University, Australia.
My work looks at the damage done to DNA by radiation and how that DNA repairs itself.
I have access to a large range of ultrasonic equipment, and also fantastic bio-labs where I conduct my bacterial research.
I’ve expanded my knowledge in different scientific fields, become familiar with advanced laboratory techniques and cutting-edge equipment handling, and collaborated with many experts.
I’ve been able to improve my entrepreneurial skills and develop a ‘green’ business idea which has gone through to the final round of an EU Project award, where I will have to pitch to investors.
I’m now finishing the first year of my PhD and I have already filed a patent application covering the intellectual property of the novel materials I’ve developed.
“It’s great to know that the study I’ve conducted could benefit the future energy picture by enabling advanced CO2 capture systems.”
“When I heard about this PhD project I knew I wanted to do it. It wasn’t just the science that excited me but also its direct impact and relevance to industry and the outside world.”
