NHS Health Checks

The NHS Health Check is a national programme to help prevent and detect risk factors for cardiovascular disease. The free check involves a series of assessments which provide a global picture of your cardiovascular health.

What is cardiovascular disease?

Cardiovascular disease is an umbrella term for conditions of the heart and blood vessels. Examples of cardiovascular disease include:

  • Stroke
  • Heart disease
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Kidney disease
  • Dementia

What are risk factors?

Risk factors are things that can increase your chances of developing a disease. The main risk factors for cardiovascular disease are assessed in the NHS Health Check, these include:

  • High blood pressure
  • Smoking
  • High cholesterol
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Inactivity
  • Being overweight
  • Ethnic background
  • Family history

What tests are involved?

We will perform a series assessments and give you your results during your appointment, along with advice on how to improve your results. These assessments include:

  • Blood pressure
  • Cholesterol levels
  • Smoking status
  • Height and weight
  • Waist measurement
  • Physical activity level
  • Alcohol consumption

Am I eligible?

To qualify for a free NHS Health Check, you must:

  • Be aged 40-74
  • Be registered to a GP in Surrey
  • Have not had an NHS Health Check in the past 5 years
  • Not currently be medicated for any cardiovascular disease

How do I book a health check?

30 minute appointments are available from 08:00-17:00, Monday-Friday. To book, contact us or come and see us at our lab in Surrey Sports Park.
