Biomedicine with Data Science BSc (Hons) – 2018 entry

Our degree will give you the knowledge of human and medical biology with an understanding of the mathematical and computational approaches used to analyse the volume of personal health information captured in our digital world.

Programme overview

As technologies have advanced within the Biosciences, the generation of large data sets (“Big Data”) has brought new challenges in data processing and analysis; in the field of health care, ever-more comprehensive data is being collated from patients, both as individuals and as whole cohorts. Our Biomedicine with Data Science degree will produce graduates with the unique set of knowledge and skills to capitalise on the advances already being made in data generation and collection, and will give them a competitive edge in this emerging jobs market.

The degree is part of Surrey’s pioneering Innovation for Health programme, designed to bring together computer, data and health scientists to meet the challenges of an ageing population and changing patterns of disease, developing technologies that will facilitate improvements in healthcare.

Professional Training placement (optional)

Many of our students opt to do a Professional Training placement. These normally begin at the end of the second academic year and finish in time for you to begin the third year of study.

Professional Training placements offer students the opportunity to gain access to the world of work, including meeting employers, developing job search skills and acquiring the employability skills that employers look for. Find out more about Professional Training placements.

Year 3 (FHEQ Level 6)

Professional recognition

This programme is seeking accreditation from the Royal Society of Biology.

Teaching

The practical component of your degree, which includes both wet labs and computer labs, will begin in your first year with organised lab practicals representing around a quarter of your taught time.  

By the time you reach your final year your research project will allow you to integrate your knowledge of biomedicine and computational approaches to 'Big Data' in order to plan and tackle your own independent piece of scientific research.

Throughout the programme you will have the opportunity to consider some of the key health challenges of the future. These sessions will be delivered with engineers and computer scientists to help you develop fundamental teamwork and communication skills, drawing on the specific knowledge of the different areas.

The new Engineering for Health building will have a number of active learning spaces which are designed to encourage group working.

Assessment

Modules are assessed individually and credits are awarded for the successful completion of each one. Assessment takes place through a combination of examination and/or coursework, practical examinations and reports.

Facilities

As a student on the Biomedicine Data Science degree you will benefit from the new £10 million Engineering for Health building at the University of Surrey.

This three-storey building will include:

  • Biology laboratory: a 200-seat laboratory for undergraduate biosciences teaching programmes
  • Human movement laboratory: housing state-of-the-art technology enabling detailed biomechanical analysis of gait (walking patterns) and upper-limb movement: equipment includes a motion capture system, force platforms, a medical grade treadmill, pressure mat and electromyography (EMG) kit
  • Electronics laboratory: accommodating 50 students, this will enable users to assemble and troubleshoot hardware-based projects such as health monitoring equipment, sensor-based instrumentation, body area networking projects, short-range wireless communication projects and data acquisition and processing projects
  • Computing area: accommodating over 70 students, this will include lab and lecture space, enabling ‘show and tell’ teaching for computing projects, as well as hardware projects that involve embedded programming components
  • Central active learning space: including eight project ‘pods’ designed to enable group work, this is where engineering and physical science students will solve key engineering for health challenges: it will also be used by researchers and healthcare professionals to develop key ideas, and for research sessions with members of the public

This is in addition to all of the existing laboratory and teaching spaces which you will have access to as a student.

You are allocated a personal tutor to guide you through the programme and advise on your option choices and future career, helping you to get the most out of your time at Surrey.

We give our students the opportunity to acquire international experience during their degrees by taking advantage of our exchange agreements with overseas universities or by completing a Professional Training placement abroad. Our international exchange programme offers you the opportunity to study abroad at a partner university for either one semester or a full academic year as part of your degree.

For Biosciences students this might be possible for one or two semesters in your second year at one of our partner institutions in the USA (for example, Texas, Cincinnati or Florida) or in Australia (Swinburne University of Technology).

The exchange programme enables you to study and live in another country and earn credits that contribute towards your Surrey degree, without paying additional tuition fees. In doing so you will broaden your horizons, meet other exchange students from around the world and experience student life in some of the most prestigious universities in the world.

Studying abroad also enables you to become more independent, teaching you how to adapt and adjust to the culture and climate of another country.

In addition, or alternatively, you may wish to consider spending your Professional Training year working in another country. Students have travelled to the USA, Australia and many European countries, and typically work in a research laboratory at a partner institution.

If you work in another part of Europe you will be eligible for an Erasmus+ grant, as well as your full student loan if undertaking an unpaid research placement. This is an excellent opportunity not only to acquire valuable work experience but also improve or learn another language.

One of the main reasons for our graduate employability success is our Professional Training placement programme which is one of the largest in the World, with over 2,300 partner organisations in the UK and overseas. The majority of our students choose to undertake a professional training placement to gain vital work experience and develop professional skills required by employers.

Many of our professional training placements are salaried roles, with opportunities in the UK including pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, the NHS and research institutes.

Recent Biosciences placements have taken place at international institutions including Cornell University, Washington State University, Harvard Medical School (USA), the University of Turku (Finland) and several other European universities.

For students undertaking the Biomedicine with Data Science programme, exciting opportunities to apply computational approaches to human and medical data span the breadth of medicine and health science.  

Students enrolled on this programme will be highly competitive applicants for many of our existing placements, and as this field continues to expand the opportunities will continue to increase.

Graduate prospects

As technologies have advanced within biosciences, the generation of large data sets (Big Data) across many disciplines has brought new challenges in terms of data processing and analysis, and the generation of realistic computational models to address complex biological and medical questions.  

In the field of healthcare, ever more comprehensive data is being collated from patients, both as individuals and as whole cohorts.  

A new breed of medical bioscientist, who can bring together knowledge of human and medical biology with an understanding of the mathematical and computational approaches used to analyse such data, is required in order to capitalise on the advances already being made in data generation and collection.  

Our Biomedicine with Data Science programme will provide students with this unique set of knowledge and skills, and will give them a competitive edge in this newly emerging job market.

Overall: 45 Level 3 credits overall including 30 at Distinction and 15 at Merit.

Required Subjects: This must include 15 credits in Biology and 15 credits in Mathematics or Physics.

BTEC (QCF Level 3) Extended Diploma

Overall: DDD in Applied Science (please contact us if you are taking a different BTEC).
