BA (Hons) — 2024 entry Theatre Production

The purpose of this module is to introduce students to the context for video and projection technologies associated with theatre production. This module reflects the programme's aim to produce practitioners with specialist knowledge. This module will serve as a general introduction to audio visual technologies for students whose area of professional interest may be elsewhere, or as an introduction to professional practice for students who wish to make audio visual technologies a lasting part of their skillset. This module promotes sustainable industry & innovation though through the use of digital display technologies, and responsible consumption through promoting the skills and practice of digital scenography and the use of energy efficient digital projection systems.

The purpose of this module is to introduce students to the practical and creative skills needed to interpret and realise scenography through set construction, prop-making and scenic painting. By introducing the tools, materials and techniques used in construction and scenic arts, and the knowledge of how to use them safely and sustainably, we will be providing them with the underpinning knowledge needed to explore and achieve design realisation processes both independently and as a team. This module reflects the  aim to produce practitioners with specialist knowledge; here specifically in the field of construction and scenic arts, whilst Introducing students to the many departmental crossovers that exist in design realisation and other areas of Theatre Production. Throughout this module students will be expected to work ethically and responsibly;  using methods that incorporate repurposing , recycling, and how to consider using  existing resources at every stage of the production process.  The challenge of working within the circular economy whilst producing effective and aesthetically appropriate scenic elements with be explored, and students will be  responsible for ensuring that these challenges are addressed both individually and as a member of the workshop team.

This Module is a mixture of online theory classes, hands-on face to face practical workshops and labs, and independent tasks and projects. It is aimed at the entry-level student and assumes no prior experience in sound to ensure all students, regardless of experience or preferred pathway have relevant and rewarding learning experience.

This module is designed to introduce students to the basics of lighting and stage electrics for theatre and live events. Students will gain an understanding of the mainstay of lighting equipment, associated techniques and the fundamental processes used in a professional production environment.  The module will include all relevant and up to date industry specific information around working responsibly and sustainably in line with UN sustainability goals and those outlined in the Theatre Green Book.

This module is designed to introduce students to the theory and practice of stage management within the UK theatre and global live entertainment industry. Students will study all foundational aspects of stage management practice whilst being encouraged to consider the pivotal role of stage management as creative facilitators within the production process. During this module students will be introduced to the concept of sustainability in production within stage management.  This will be guided by the principles and guidance of the Theatre Green Book, particularly as it relates to stage management practices such as prop making/sourcing, rehearsal management and performance management. Students will be equipped to apply this learning practically in GSA and external production projects.

This module will introduce you to production design and scneography skills in Lighting, Sound and Set Design. The aim is to introduce you to the processes, practices, tools and skill sets to begin looking at production design in this disciplines. You will look at current lighting sound and set designers, across production arts from varies entertainment genres. The module will also focus on the many design transferable skills across the disciplines, such as text analysis, communicating with technicians and the design team, communicating your design ideas, and sources of inspiration for design. The aim of this module is to better understand the design process. The key to a good production technician is facilitating your designers vision, be that in lighting sound or set design.  The scenographic process will include a sustainability focus which could use principles from the industry developed Green book as well as good health and well-being best practices and promoting positive work ethics like collaboration.  Our aim is responsible consumption, including recycling and re-purposing, considering existing resources and promoting a circular economy within our production process and everyday life at GSA and going into the industry creating a positive contribution to ethical innovation and entrepreneurship. 

This module is designed to allow students to undertake a support role in a time critical production environment. Students will work in support of assigned departmental work and explore the collaborative nature of production through the communication and delivery of a live performance. Working within their peer group, freelance and in-house production teams, students will be able to apply and evidence basic skill acquisition in the core activities of the pre-production, production and post-production periods. Throughout this module students will be expected to work responsibly and as far as reasonably practicable towards sustainable goals in producing and working on GSA shows.  As guided and outlined by the Theatre green book, with guidance from SIPA (sustainability in production alliance). 

Each student will undertake PRO2032 as a combination of pathway or non-pathway roles to create a portfolio of work to progress their confidence and autonomy in dealing with the realisation of complex technical and artistic challenges.   In taking an intermediate level support role where there are clear responsibilities and tasks required to successfully contribute to the delivery of a public production, students will work within their peer group, freelance staff and in-house production teams, students will be able to apply and evidence skills acquisition in the core activities of pre-production, production and post-production.  During this module, students will be asked to work responsibly and as far as reasonably practicable towards being more sustainable. Using principles as outlined in the industry developed Theatre Green book, with guidance and support from SIPA ( Sustainability in production alliance), all productions will incorporate elements of sustainable practice from the design concept forward.  Our aim is responsible consumption, including recycling and re-purposing, considering existing resources and promoting a circular economy within our production process and everyday life at GSA.   

This module is designed to work alongside the Specialist Pathway Development module to empower students to begin their ‘journey’ of professional development within their chosen field in the global entertainment industry. It will include a short period of work experience within an approved professional setting. In the delivery of this module, GSA is guided by the UN's 17 Sustainable Development goals. We aim to promote good health and well-being by keeping to appropriate working hours and maintaining Equity-standard safe spaces. We encourage positive working ethics: collaboration, kindness, support, understanding, listening and integrity. We aim to encourage enterprise and entrepreneurship as well as fostering an understanding of sustainable business models. An understanding of sustainable funding streams so that practice can take place in a viable ethical way post graduation. We encourage collaboration within the community through initiative that support social sustainability.      

Building on Level 4 taught modules and subsequent production roles, this Specialist Pathway Development module is designed to advance students' exploration of their subject pathway choice to an intermediate level of understanding and competence.

A final teaching module aimed at giving the students time to reflect their own practice within there chosen vocation in theatre production. A chance to research into an specialist area of their choice. An opportunity to focus upon some of the more advance skills in their subject area, identify areas that they perhaps need to work to improve, and develop industry links and networking opportunities to enhance their careers

This module is designed to allow students to advance the development of skills and knowledge in a practical context within their chosen Pathway, consolidating prior learning, discovery and autonomy and where agreed the students may undertake non-pathway support roles In taking a number of roles in GSA productions through teaching blocks 1 and 2, students will develop the planning, presentation and realisation of artistic concepts or the management and design of complex technical components, progressing their professional skills, confidence and critical development. Working within their peer group, freelance and in-house production teams, students will be able to apply and evidence confident management and collaboration appropriate to all elements of the production process. During this module, students will be asked to work responsibly and as far as reasonably practicable towards being more sustainable. Using principles as outlined in the industry developed Theatre Green book, with guidance and support from SIPA ( Sustainability in production alliance), all productions will incorporate elements of sustainable practice from the design concept forward.  Our aim is responsible consumption, including recycling and re-purposing, considering existing resources and promoting a circular economy within our production process and everyday life at GSA.     

This module focuses on the appraisal and development of students' showcase proposal. Building on the Level 5 Professional Development module, students will construct a considered and innovative proposal and plan evidencing a creative concept for their Showcase presentation underpinned by industry research and innovation. This module consolidates all activity towards the realisation of the students' Showcase event, a marketing event for soon to graduate students providing an opportunity to connect with prospective employers and key practitioners representing all production sectors of the entertainment and theatre industry. This may or may not be a digital/streamed event and/or may or may not be a live event.
