Clearing explained
Be prepared for Clearing
With A-level results day approaching, it pays to prepare for Clearing to ensure you’re clued up on options and in a good position on the day.
- Clearing starts: Friday 5 July 2024 (and runs until the end of September)
- Results day: Thursday 15 August 2024
If you've already applied to university, you'll have to wait until results day to see if your place has been confirmed.
UCAS Hub will tell you if you're eligible for Clearing on results day. If you are, you will be given a Clearing Number. Keep a note of your Clearing Number and your UCAS Personal ID, as you will need these when calling universities.

1 May – Pre-Clearing opens at Surrey 📧
Sign up for our Clearing email updates to discover our range of courses, hear from current students, join exclusive events, receive a complimentary Clearing planner, and enter our prize draw.

1 May to 4 July – Request a callback 💬
Our Recruitment team is on hand to call you if you require any additional information about the Clearing process. Select ‘request a callback’ when signing up for our Clearing updates and our recruitment team will call you back within 2 weeks. Please note that we will not be able to talk about your application.

5 July – Clearing opens with UCAS 💙
On Friday 5 July, Clearing officially opens with UCAS and will continue until September. If you don’t have your exam results, you will need to wait until you receive them before you can apply through Clearing.
We will add all our courses open for Clearing on Friday 5 July.

SQA and JCQ results embargo periods 🚨
29 July at 18:00 (UK time) – 6 August at 09:00 (UK time)
9 August at 14:00 (UK time) – 15 August at 08:00 (UK time)
Please note we will not be able to contact or discuss your application during the embargo periods.

15 August – Our Clearing hotline opens 📞
This is when Clearing 2024 will officially begin for the majority of students as they make their choices based on their results.
We will release our hotline number and calling opening times closer to results day.
