Veterinary Biosciences BSc (Hons)

Why I chose Surrey

From a very young age I had a keen interest in veterinary science and medicine. I chose to study BSc (Hons) Veterinary Biosciences at Surrey because it helps to bridge the gap between practising veterinary medicine and the laboratory research and diagnostics that are required to improve animal health. The degree also offered the chance to undertake a one year, laboratory-based placement, which is essential for a scientific career.

My course

I've enjoyed the wide range of subjects we have studied. The course helps you to develop a broad range of knowledge so you can truly find out where your interests lie.

My placement

I was fortunate to be awarded a three-month scholarship to study abroad at North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine, USA at the end of my first year, and I returned to the same lab for my Professional Training placement. Being abroad for a year had its challenges; however it was a great experience and incredibly rewarding both in terms of laboratory research and life experience, which I hope will boost my employability when I graduate.

My career and development

My time at Surrey has improved my confidence and has allowed me to reach my full potential, thanks to the quality of the teaching and the support I’ve been given by tutors and lecturers. I'm now more driven towards a career in microbiology-based research, having had many opportunities to carry out research both on placement and whilst undertaking my final-year project and I'm currently applying for PhDs.
