Biography

Prof John Varcoe trained at the University of Exeter, receiving a B.Sc.(1995 - top 1st class honours) and Ph.D. (1999). He has held post-doctoral positions at the University of Surrey (1999-2006). He was appointed Lecturer in Materials Chemistry at the University of Surrey in August 2006, Reader in Materials Chemistry in April 2011 and Professor of Materials Chemistry in April 2013. He obtained his Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice in 2008. He was Faculty Researcher of the Year in 2010 and was awarded an EPSRC Leadership Fellowship in July 2010.

Research Interests

His research interests are the development of polymer electrolytes and ionomers for fuel cells, redox flow batteries, desalination and reverse desalination systems, and biological systems for clean & sustainable energy generation (including Microbial Fuel Cells). He is a key member of the Surrey Team that is part of the UK's SuperGen5 Biological Fuel Cells Consortium, a Chartered Scientist, Chartered Chemist and Member of the Royal Society of Chemistry, and was an invited technical expert for the International Energy Agency Advanced Fuel Cells Implementation Agreement (Annex XVI Polymer Electrolyte Fuel Cells 1999 - 2008). He has recently written a chapter on anion-exchange membranes for the latest volume (vol. 5) of the prestigious Handbook of Fuel Cells (published in 2009) and for the Encyclopedia of Electrochemical Power Sources (to be published in 2009). 

More specific interests include the use of alkaline anion-exchange membranes, hybrid (anion-/cation-exchange) membranes, non-platinum catalysts, and the use of hydrogen (including dirty hydrogen), alcohol, nitrogen (ammonia) and boron (borohydride) fuel vectors in energy and water treatment systems. A major theme being pursued is the study of low temperature carbonate/bicarbonate conducting polymer electrolytes.
