What our students say

Lots of opportunity to get involved

Jessica Hadjis van Thiel

Management and Business PhD

“As a part-time student, it is important that I can access support remotely, as I am not always on campus. Surrey’s IT facilities are exceptional, with staff providing all module materials online through SurreyLearn.

I believe my time at Surrey has positively impacted my employability, as there are several transferrable skills that I have had the opportunity to improve. This includes skills such as data analysis and communication that will be integral to my future career in the psychological field. I was given the opportunity to hear from a patient during a lecture, which is a difficult perspective to come across in a non-clinical setting. This was a unique experience that not only helped me in my academic writing, but also gave me an insight into the communication skills that are integral to psychological practice.

I came to Surrey believing that I was making the best choice for my future career aspirations, and I have not been disappointed by what is on offer here.”

“My research at Surrey focuses on mining in sub-Saharan Africa. As one of the richest regions in the world in terms of natural resources, harnessing the extractive sector for the development of the region remains a major challenge. Coming from the region, and with a background in human geography, I am keen to contribute towards finding lasting solutions to bridge the development gap.

My experience at Surrey has been awesome. With a very supportive learning environment, my research has progressed steadily. My supervisor has been incredibly helpful – his mentorship and support in both my academic training and personal development is unmatched.  As an international student who had not lived in the UK before, my initial concern was how I would integrate into the community. But I quickly made friends from different cultural backgrounds, which has immensely shaped my world-view.

Without doubt, Surrey prepares you to face the future with confidence and pleasure.”

A positive impact on my employability

“As part of my MA I conducted field research in Cote d’Ivoire on the formalisation of artisanal and small-scale gold mining in the country. The complexity of the topic, from a development perspective, convinced me to dive deeper in the world of ASM. A PhD provided the best opportunity to do in-depth research and continue my own research in Cote d’Ivoire.

What makes living and studying in Guildford attractive is the location. Not only is the town surrounded by beautiful nature, but also the connection with London and Gatwick Airport is very good. For someone with an international orientation this is very nice. I also enjoy exploring the Surrey Hills and playing football at Surrey Sports Park.

Doing a PhD at Surrey enables me to network in my field, present my work both in the academic and in the public space and publish articles in peer-reviewed journals. These are all very important experiences that will definitely have a positive impact on my employability.”
