About us

In the community

With extensive connections to Guildford and the wider region, the University of Surrey plays a key role in contributing to the local community.

At Surrey, we value our relationship with the local community. When the University moved to Guildford from Battersea in 1966, the Surrey Advertiser welcomed our arrival as a way to "balance the town's rapid commercial growth, help its cultural life to develop and assure its status".

Connecting with the community

We attract a wealth of high-calibre students, staff and partners who engage with Guildford and the surrounding boroughs. Our students are involved in a number of community volunteering projects and our staff visit local schools to inspire the next generation.

45 per cent of our undergraduate students come from schools and colleges within the south-east region.

Innovate Guildford: Science & Arts Festival

The University of Surrey is pleased to have been invited back for this year’s second Innovate Guildford Science & Arts Festival. Innovate Guildford, which sits under the Mayor of Guildford’s innovation theme, is aimed at inspiring young people in a family-friendly atmosphere.

  • Date: Saturday 4 March 2017, 10am-5pm
  • Location: GLive

This year will feature a diverse mix of science and arts activity from a range of exciting organisations including the University of Surrey.

After taking some time to look at the great activities we do on campus, we’ve selected three to represent us at this year’s event. These are:

  • Physics with Lego Particle Physics and Radioactive Rocks
  • Chemical Engineering with their Science of Superheroes
  • Surrey Space Centre with the Remove Debris project

Atti Emecz, Acting Vice-Provost Research and Innovation, said: “One of the key tasks for us as a university is to make our research accessible, relevant and understood by the general public. Our mission is to inspire the next generation of innovators, who we hope will study with us on their journey to the stars. I’m confident that these projects will provide a taster of the wonderful things we do at the University.”

Guildford Borough Council are looking to continue this as an annual event, so we’re always looking for more activity from the University to represent us and inspire young people. If you think that’s you please do contact our Interim Public Engagement Manager Ross Kelway r.kelway@surrey.ac.uk.

Surrey Research Park

We are continually working hard to bring added value to those around us. Together with the Surrey Research Park, we support many small businesses and generate over a billion pounds of economic activity annually in the regional economy.

Surrey Sports Park

Every month, we host a programme of activities here on campus or at our premier sporting facility, Surrey Sports Park, which is accessible to members of the public.

Social impact report 2016

The University of Surrey has launched a new Social Impact Report, Driving Positive Change, marking the broadening of its ongoing commitment to assessing and managing the significant impact it has as a university.

As the University celebrates its 50th anniversary in Guildford, the report reflects on the impact and contributions it has made and will continue to make on society and the world with the support of its staff and students and the people of Guildford and Surrey.

Through annual observation, measurement and reflection, the University intends to increase its contribution to positive change locally, nationally and globally.
