The 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF) confirms the high quality research being produced by the Department of Physics, with 84 per cent of our research output rated as world-leading or internationally excellent. Our research in physics has contributed strongly to Surrey’s rise to 22nd place among 106 institutions for ‘Research Power’ across the engineering and physical science disciplines, based on the quality of our research.

Research in the department is conducted in four centres:

Crystalline cluster Lennard

The Department's Soft Matter group studies crystallisation, as illustrated by this computer snapshot of a crystallite, which has been modelled in interactive 3D.
