Start-up and SME business support

If you are a start up, SME or spin-out company looking for support in growing your business, become a member of the University of Surrey incubator, SETsquared Surrey.

The University of Surrey is a founding member in the nationally recognised SETsquared Partnership for supporting student and academic enterprise, business incubation and business scaleup, all of which are also key to current Government agenda.

We have been supporting high-tech, high-growth start-ups since 2002. Our SETsquared Surrey incubation services are delivered using the SETsquared business model and we also have an exclusive offering unique to Surrey  


The Surrey incubator is located in the Surrey Technology Centre, based on Surrey Research Park and helps young technology-based businesses find their feet in a commercial environment. It recruits the best of talent while providing access to the excellent resources, both human and material and within the University.

The flexible range of office space in the Surrey Technology Centre helps businesses control overheads at a highly sensitive time in their development. As businesses grows, there is the opportunity to take more space on the Research Park. 

We have a unique entrepreneurial eco-system which provides dedicated desks for our members as well mentors, clinics, skills workshops and masterclasses. 


The core of the offering is a dedicated business adviser who supports you in analysing your business strategy and prioritising your development. The adviser will signpost you to the relevant mentors, clinics, skills workshops, masterclasses and a vibrant network of businesses and services across the region, as well as connecting you into programmes that the University offers:

Our S100 Club is a unique angel investment network, showcasing the best innovative high-growth propositions. It provides unparalleled access for our start-up companies to angel finance and is another distinguishing factor in Surrey’s impact profile. 

The SPace Research and Innovation Network for Technology (SPRINT) programme provides support to SMEs, helping them to compete and grow using space technologies and applications. This programmes provides funding for eligible SMEs to access University research and expertise and develop their space technology related product or service.

BlockStart is a pan-European distributed ledger technology/blockchain partnership programme. We’re looking for seed, early- and growth-stage startups/ SMEs from all over the EU and H2020 associated countries, and provide you with the chance to build goal-oriented, business-focused, and mutually beneficial partnerships with SME adopters of blockchain solutions.  For more information on this programme, please do visit the website: https://www.blockstart.eu/

The Scale-Up programme offers an exciting innovation prospect for corporate organisations to get ahead of the competition and find innovative companies that are generating revenue and are ready to scale. It supports companies which are developing leading-edge technologies to form collaborative research projects with a SETsquared university and supports the SME to find the talent and funding it needs to scale.

The INCluSilver project aims to support SMEs in generating and validating innovative ideas in the field of personalised nutrition for the silver economy. Special financial support is also available for SMEs.

The 5G Innovation Centre collaborates with regional partners across the UK. Part of this includes helping SMEs to explore and develop products and services that will use 5G technology, in addition to helping them to engage with major mobile telecommunications companies and explore joint opportunities.

How we support entrepreneurs and businesses

Work with us

We work with a range of organisations who support our network. Professional service companies provide free clinics and information sessions to introduce themselves to our network. Corporations engage with our sector events and competitions to find SMEs who can help innovate and solve their business challenges. Public and private funding bodies communicate their offering through us and we facilitate introductions.
