More than a degree: Amaya's experience studying tourism
Amaya, undergraduate student on our International Tourism Management BSc programme, shares her experience of learning beyond the classroom at Surrey.
"When I chose to study International Tourism Management at the University of Surrey, I wanted a degree that would teach me valuable life lessons, as well as make learning more exciting. What has made my experience at Surrey Hospitality and Tourism Management (SHTM) so rewarding, is the amount of experiential learning available. From international field trips and industry events, to volunteering and networking opportunities, I’ve been able to put theory into practice and gain experiences which have not only shaped my confidence, but also my career aspirations.
International experience
One of the biggest highlights of my degree, was choosing the optional Fieldtrip module, where we got the opportunity to visit Kenya. Being able to experience tourism in a completely different cultural setting bought everything we’d been learning in the classroom to life. It inspired me to think more critically about the industry's social, environmental and economic impacts, while developing skills which simply can’t be taught through lectures online. Having the opportunity to visit such an incredible country like Kenya, is one that not many people get, so I’m thankful for SHTM for making such an incredible trip like this happen!
Industry events
Another memorable experience was attending the World Travel Market at London ExCel, as part of my Venue Management module. Walking around one of the largest travel exhibitions, speaking with industry professionals and seeing global tourism organisations all in one place was incredibly inspiring. It gave me a clearer idea for what career I could achieve after my studies. SHTM also hosts regular employer pop-up events on campus, giving students the chance to meet companies, ask questions and explore different career paths in a relaxed environment. Events like this also include a ‘quiet hour’ for those who might need a calmer environment to socialise in. This is another factor I love about SHTM, the inclusivity and support you receive throughout your degree.
Mentoring
Outside of my studies, I was fortunate to become an ABTA (Association of British Travel Agents: the leading association of travel agents and tour operators) student representative. Having an industry mentor throughout the year, has been such a valuable part of my university experience, as they have provided guidance, encouragement and advice as I begin planning my future career. SHTM also has a real sense of community, with events throughout the year that bring students and staff together and field trips to take learning beyond the classroom, making everyone feel part of something special.
Volunteering
Surrey has also encouraged me to take opportunities beyond campus. Through one of the University’s partner organisations, I spent a month volunteering in Sri Lanka, working on marine and wildlife conservation projects while immersing myself in a new culture. It was an unforgettable experience, which strengthened my adaptability, teamwork and communication skills. Alongside opportunities like this, students also can complete a placement year in the UK or overseas, to gain valuable industry experience before graduating.
Looking back, it is these unforgettable experiences, alongside the meaningful relationships I built with my lecturers, that have truly defined my time at Surrey. They’ve helped me grow in confidence, develop practical skills and build a clearer picture of where I want my career to take me.
If you’re considering studying at SHTM, my advice would be to say yes to every opportunity you can and never let anyone tell you that you’re not capable of doing something! The experiences you’ll gain beyond the lecture theatre are the ones you’ll remember long after you graduate."
