Surrey sustainability researcher elected Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering

Professor Jhuma Sadhukhan, a world-renowned researcher in life cycle assessment and circular bioeconomy, has been elected Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering.

Fellowship of the Royal Academy of Engineering is considered to be the highest honour for engineers in the UK and brings together a community of 1,700 leaders from academia, industry and government. This year’s cohort, announced in the Academy’s 50th anniversary year, includes a record 24 women.

Professor Sadhukhan is Co-Director of the Global Centre for Sustainable Bioproducts at Surrey and is an expert in research on turning waste, from municipal rubbish to industrial carbon dioxide, into fuels, chemicals and materials. With her world-leading specialism in biorefineries, bioeconomy, life cycle assessment and technoeconomic analysis, she has contributed to more than 30 transdisciplinary industrial projects. Her community-focused work includes bioenergy systems for marginalised poor communities in Mexico that shaped national bioeconomy policy.

Professor Sadhukhan is a Chartered Engineer, a Chartered Scientist and a Fellow of both the Institution of Chemical Engineers and the Royal Society of Chemistry.

I am truly honoured to join such a prestigious community of my peers - engineers who work across many disciplines and who are dedicated to making our planet as sustainable as possible. That question – how we become more sustainable – is one that motivates me greatly. It fuels my work today, and this Fellowship only adds to the drive to work towards realising a net-zero economy for the UK and beyond.
