Sustainability Assembly: opening up the conversation on sustainability

The University’s first Sustainability Assembly of the academic year took place on Wednesday 22 October 2025.

Every year at least three assemblies take place, providing staff and students with a chance to hear about the University’s sustainability journey to date, and also discuss ideas for improvement.

During the recent assembly, staff and students shared their thoughts on how to integrate sustainability into all aspects of university life – from how we operate as an organisation, to how we teach sustainability.

Over 40 suggestions were submitted and discussed during the event, which will now be reviewed by the Sustainability Team to ensure the University meets its ambitious aims of becoming a leading sustainable institution.

Staff and students are still encouraged to join the conversation on sustainability at the University, and are invited to share their thoughts by emailing sustainability@surrey.ac.uk.

The University's Sustainability Assemblies are just one way we’re embedding the UN Sustainable Development Goals into everything we do. These events aim to encourage staff and students to share their ideas and take climate action whilst at the University (Sustainable Development Goals 13 – climate action).
