Sustainable engagement success at Surrey
Over 2000 staff and students have been actively involved with sustainability events and activities over the 25/26 academic year.
This marks a 23% increase in staff/student sustainability engagement and highlights the University’s continued commitment to enable and empower our community to take sustainable action.
Key highlights from this year’s events and activities include:
Sustainability Week:
During 16 March – 20 March 2026, a range of sustainable activities were organised aiming to raise the profile of sustainability at the University. Key events included World Water Day talks, exploring the latest in sustainable water research, and a wildlife pond building session.

Sustainability Mark:
The Sustainability Mark, a sustainability awards scheme for societies and clubs, ran for its second year. Over 20 student groups got involved with the initiative, run as a collaboration between the University’s Sustainability Team and Surrey Students’ Union. 7 groups successfully completed the Mark’s 5 actions and received sustainability awards at the SU Union and Colours Ball in May 2026.

Community Garden:
A group of staff volunteers, representing the Sustainability, Library and Centre for Wellbeing teams, came together to reignite Community Garden sessions on Stag Hill campus. Throughout the year, the group have consistently run free gardening workshops on Tuesday afternoons, aiming to provide a space for our community to learn how to grow food, whilst highlighting the well-being benefits of spending time in nature.
It’s fantastic to see more staff and students getting involved with sustainability at Surrey. I look forward to continuing to work with departments from across the University to provide our community with more opportunities to get involved with sustainability.Charlotte Discombe, Sustainability Awareness Coordinator
