University of Surrey and Givaudan UK create scents tailored to older people
Older people have rich and active lives, yet the beauty and wellbeing industry often overlooks them – something Givaudan UK and the University of Surrey worked to change through an Innovate UK-funded Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP).
Together, Givaudan UK and Surrey, led by KTP Associate Megan Loughnane, designed fragrances that reflect the needs of older people by developing three new capabilities – working directly with older people to collect detailed data on sensitivity to different types of odours, measuring cognitive health changes resulting from olfactory training and assessing the impact of odours on overall wellbeing.
The KTP allowed Givaudan UK to create fragrances tailored specifically for older consumers, enabling the company to expand its product range and meet the needs of a growing market.
Following an independent review of the project after its completion in March 2026, the project received an ‘Outstanding’ grade, the highest possible rating that can be awarded by the funder, Innovate UK.
Givaudan is a global leader in the creation of flavours and fragrances, working with some of the world’s most recognisable consumer brands. With a history dating back more than 250 years, the company combines science, creativity and innovation to craft products that enhance everyday experiences. In the UK, Givaudan develops fragrances that inspire and improve wellbeing, serving customers across personal care, home care and fine fragrance markets.
We are delighted and proud that our KTP with the University of Surrey has been recognised with an Outstanding grade. This achievement reflects the strength of the close collaboration between Givaudan and Surrey, and the significant impact the project has delivered. Through the programme, we have strengthened our understanding of the needs of the Silver Generation as an increasingly important consumer group, generating new scientific insights that support innovation within our Health and Wellbeing portfolio. We have greatly valued the expertise of the University and hope to continue our collaboration.Simon Ellwood, Head of Health and Wellbeing, Fragrance & Beauty at Givaudan UK and Chair of the KTP project
For 50 years, Innovate UK’s Knowledge Transfer Partnerships have brought together forward-thinking businesses and organisations, leading academics and graduates to solve complex innovation challenges which help our economy, society, and environment. Each collaboration is a three-way partnership between – a business or organisation with an innovative idea or challenge; a UK knowledge base with the expertise to deliver the innovation or solve the challenge; and a graduate who will drive the project forward to delivery. KTPs support talented individuals into high-value employment, enrich academic institutions, and fuel the success and profitability of UK businesses.
The KTP was an outstanding success for everyone involved, with significant outcomes for Givaudan, the University of Surrey and Megan, the KTP Associate. Being involved with such a professional team, in which relationships were so strong, was a real pleasure.Terry Corner, Knowledge Transfer Adviser at Innovate UK Business Connect
