- Research Technical Professional/experimental officer
As a Research Technical Professional in the Structures and Materials Testing Laboratory at the University of Surrey, my key responsibilities include:
- Managing the day-to-day operation of the Structures and Materials Testing Laboratory, ensuring a safe, efficient, and well-maintained environment for teaching, research, and consultancy activities.
- Providing technical support for undergraduate (UG), postgraduate taught (PGT), and postgraduate research (PGR) laboratory classes, student projects, and experimental research.
- Designing, preparing, and conducting laboratory experiments involving concrete, timber, steel, composites, and other construction materials.
- Preparing, mixing, casting, curing, and testing concrete specimens in accordance with relevant British and international standards.
- Operating, maintaining, calibrating, and troubleshooting a wide range of laboratory equipment, including servo-hydraulic testing systems, impact testing equipment, Digital Image Correlation (DIC) systems, 3D scanners, and other specialist instrumentation.
- Developing and implementing experimental procedures for monotonic, cyclic, impact, compression, tension, bending, and shear testing of structural materials and components.
- Supporting externally funded research projects, industrial consultancy, and collaborative research by providing technical expertise and experimental solutions.
- Producing risk assessments, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and ensuring compliance with health and safety legislation and laboratory best practice.
- Procuring laboratory equipment and consumables, managing laboratory inventories, and coordinating equipment servicing and maintenance.
- Supervising undergraduate placements, MSc dissertations, PhD researchers, and visiting researchers, providing technical training and mentorship.
- Supporting the development of new laboratory capabilities, experimental methods, and digital measurement techniques, including 3D scanning and Digital Image Correlation (DIC).
- Liaising with academic staff, researchers, technicians, contractors, and external partners to ensure the successful delivery of teaching, research, and consultancy activities.
